Books for Writers

My books for writers, published in conjunction with Fiction Attic Press, provide instruction, inspiration, and valuable advice to help you write your novel, memoir, or story.

If you’d like to get some words on the page and discover your subject, begin with Story Starters. This workbook will guide you through 50 days of exercises that build upon one another. The writing prompts in Story Starters are divided into elements of narrative craft, so that you can experiment with plot, dialogue, characterization, structure, setting, and more. When you complete Story Starters, you will have written several flash fictions, as well as scenes that will become the building blocks of your novel.

The Complete Character is your guide to writing complex characters that drive the story forward with clear, genuine motivations. Learn the different methods of character revelation, and practice each one, building your protagonist so that you have a character readers will care about.

The Paperclip Method: The No-Outline Novel Workbook, will help you structure your novel. Designed to be used in conjunction with Story Starters and The Complete Character, The Paperclip Method will help you lay out the pieces of your novel without an outline. You’ll learn the best techniques for pacing your story, how to balance the main plot with subplots, and how to add depth and dimension to your novel.

Next Draft focuses on revision. You’ll learn to see your book with new eyes, streamline the narrative, and make important revisions before sending your book out into the world.
